Abstract

This study examines the cultural-based da'wah strategy implemented by the Japan Da’wah Center (JDC) in Osaka to increase the acceptance of Islam in Japan. The background of this research includes the history of the introduction of Islam to Japan, the challenges of da'wah in the past, and the current development of Islamic propagation in Japan. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study method based on the Gioia approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The results indicate that JDC utilizes three main strategies in its da'wah efforts: a sentimental strategy emphasizing emotional and personal experiences; a rational strategy focusing on discussions and logical information; and a sensory strategy incorporating Japanese cultural elements into da'wah. The challenges faced by JDC include prejudice and negative stereotypes towards Islam, cultural and language differences, and limited resources. Nonetheless, JDC's cultural-based approach has proven effective in introducing Islam to Japanese society and fostering harmonious relationships between the Muslim community and the Japanese public. Additionally, JDC organizes various activities such as seminars, cultural exchanges, and language classes that help to introduce Islamic values more deeply to the Japanese society. The approach of respecting and integrating Japanese cultural elements in each da'wah activity allows Islamic messages to be better received by the local community. This research contributes to understanding the importance of cultural-based da'wah and offers practical insights for da'wah organizations to optimize their efforts in spreading Islamic teachings in non-Muslim countries like Japan. Hence, the results of this research are expected to benefit the development of more effective da'wah strategies in the future.
