Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of clan-based imam leadership from the perspective of Da‘wah Management in Tual City, Maluku. The system of imam leadership within Tual society is influenced not only by religious competence but also by social legitimacy and local cultural traditions inherited across generations through particular clan structures. However, this system has begun to face challenges related to leadership succession due to the limited involvement of younger generations in religious activities and imam development programs. This study aims to analyze the clan-based imam leadership system, the forms of social legitimacy granted to imams by the local community, and its impact on the regeneration of da‘wah leadership. The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through field observations, interviews, and direct discussions with mosque supervisors, religious leaders, mosque administrators, and members of the local community. The findings indicate that clan-based imam leadership continues to enjoy strong social legitimacy because it is regarded as an expression of respect for customary traditions and the cultural identity of Tual society. Nevertheless, the system is increasingly confronted with succession challenges due to the limited interest and preparedness of younger generations to assume the role of imam. Furthermore, the imam development and succession process has not been implemented optimally, creating the potential for a future crisis in the regeneration of da‘wah leadership. From the perspective of Da‘wah Management, a balance is needed between respect for local culture and the strengthening of leadership development systems, youth empowerment, and religious competence in order to ensure that imam leadership remains effective and sustainable.
